HISTORY
In the mid 1800's the downtown merchants met periodically to discuss common philosophies, business ethics and services to the community. This could be construed as an early informal Merchants organization.
In the 1900's several formal organizations were established with officers and committees and served the City in bringing retail merchants to the downtown Main Street area. No formal records were available until the mid-1970's.
At this time a very effective Salem Merchants Association was established. This group remained in existence until an economic downturn in the early 80's. When the downtown economic landscape improved, a new group of merchants embarked on an aggressive membership campaign for our current SMA..
SMA has been effective in promoting business and service to the community by helping to implement the Salem Visitor's Center at the Salem Civic Center, Ye Olde Salem Christmas, the Children's Festival, the SMILE Program, and the SMA Scholarship Program. The Salem Merchants Association is not limited to retail merchants, but includes all professional entities.
